Cargo volumes at Brussels Airport are now higher than pre-Covid levels, according to its March 2021 figures.

In March this year, the hub experienced a 41% year-on-year increase in cargo volumes to 74,000 tonnes. Volumes in March 2021 were also 27% higher than March 2019, which was prior to Covid.

Full freighter traffic increased by 73% year on year “and this growth could be observed for all existing airlines”, the hub said.

Both import and export volumes increased, especially in Asia and North America.

Express services at the hub also increased by 65% year on year due to the positive impact of DHL adding extra routes in 2020 in order to support demand for e-commerce.

Trucked freight volumes increased year on year by 43% in March.

The number of cargo flights was up by 46% year on year in March 2021. Brussels Airport said this was due to an increase in the number of cargo-only passenger flights operated at the hub.

Passenger numbers at the hub declined by 91% year on year in March 2021.
