American Airlines is the latest carriers to announce that it will use passenger aircraft for cargo-only operations.
In a statement, American Airlines explained that its passenger aircraft, many of which had been grounded up to now because of low demand caused by the coronavirus outbreak, would be used to transport cargo between the US and Europe.
The Boeing 777-300 used on the route will operate two round trips between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Frankfurt Airport (FRA) over the course of four days.
Cargo on the scheduled flights will include medical supplies, mail for those active in the US military, telecommunications equipment and electronics to support people working from home and e-commerce shipments.
The flights will also provide much-needed cargo capacity for the airline’s regular cargo customers, allowing them to continue operating in what is currently a challenging market.
American Airlines will also continue carrying cargo in the bellyhold aircraft flying domestically.
